Virtual desktops are one of the most talked about topics in server management. Though virtual desktops do indeed provide some incredible benefits, there is a lot of misinformation and misconception surrounding them. Let’s take a look at many of the myths that surround VDI and why they’re not true:

#1 Myth: Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) or Physical Desktops: That is the question! Right?

Actually, both Virtual and Physical desktops have pros and cons. What we often find is that organizations will start with a small amount of virtual desktops for an application or group of users who require more flexibility than physical desktops allow, such as on-the-go access. It is much more common to start with VDI for this very reason. Then, as the organization sees the excellence in virtual desktops, they will look into expanding their deployment.

#2 Myth: VDI is too complex

VDI doesn’t have to be any more complex than managing physical desktops. The difference is that with VDI there are fewer desktops you need to manage, but the management time goes up because you’re managing multiple users’ desktops at once. Most people find this trade off very acceptable. You’re not managing each desktop individually, but rather just the master image. To go even one step further, many VDI solutions are now being integrated into centralized management suites that can manage all of your virtual and physical desktops from a single interface.

#3 Myth: Virtual Desktops are only for the elite

VDI is perfect for all organizations, not just large ones. Some of the biggest benefits VDI offers are being able to have access to your desktop environment from anywhere in the world at any time, being able to easily manage desktops centrally, and being able to increase security by having fewer outside-accessible devices. The biggest benefit is that you can save a lot of money! VDI also makes it much easier to scale up and down, allowing for your organization’s needs to change without having to constantly upgrade or downgrade hardware.

#4 Myth: VDI is not Site-Aware

VDI has come a long way, and most VDI solutions are now site aware. They can easily connect to your on-premise resources and seamlessly integrate into your network environment while still offering the same great benefits of virtual desktops.

Conclusion

VDI can bring a lot to your organization, and has come a long way from being just for large organizations. It works great in any environment, and can save you a ton of money while providing big benefits!
